Age 5: Curious about the next step

Our age-five approach gives children room to explain ideas, plan an activity and look for solutions together. Enjoying learning is a broader journey than simply knowing the answer to a question.

Discussing a game’s rules, choosing materials, presenting a creation or reviewing an attempt can bring independence and cooperation into the same day.

We do not reduce the transition to primary school to a single achievement checklist. Every child brings different interests, needs and experiences. This page is an illustrative framework; curriculum, placement and transition questions should be discussed with the school.

Play and learning

What matters in everyday experiences

Planning and responsibility

Thinking about needed materials, taking a small role and reviewing an activity after trying it.

Explaining and listening

Sharing an idea and its reasoning, listening to a friend and taking part in a shared conversation.

Trying possible solutions

Noticing a problem in a structure, game or design and comparing alternatives instead of searching for only one answer.

Concepts through play

Counting, comparing, sorting and pattern games with everyday objects connect concepts with experience.

Creating and expressing

Developing an idea through pictures, stories, music, drama or movement and explaining individual choices.

Deciding together

Discussing the arrangement of a shared game, making room for suggestions and practising ways to express disagreement.

Illustrative activity ideas

What could we explore together?

01

Our imagined play space

Children can use drawings and large construction materials to design a small play space. Discussing its parts, choosing materials and presenting the design bring planning and storytelling together.

02

More than one solution

How could a toy’s house be made stronger? Children suggest, try and compare. Rather than an adult supplying the answer immediately, there is room for another attempt.

03

Tell our own story

Chosen characters and events can become a shared story. Children select drawing, acting or speaking roles, allowing different ideas to shape the result.

Language through experience

Everyday encounters with English

English experiences may include talking about a story, making a choice in a game or meeting a short phrase during a daily routine. Language is connected with meaningful encounters rather than isolated word lists.

The priority is not perfect pronunciation or fluency within a deadline, but room to listen, make meaning and participate. Ask the school about current programme content and age-group adaptations.

Connecting home and school

With families, at each child’s pace

Families may have questions about starting activities, asking for help, friendships, responsibility and approaching learning before primary school. We value discussing these through everyday experiences, not the number of completed worksheets.

Listening to a child’s own perspective is also important. Questions such as “What did you want to try?” or “Where did you ask for help?” can open a conversation beyond right and wrong answers.

Your questions

The approach described here also values communication, responsibility, shared play, expression and participation in learning. It does not guarantee admission to a school, an academic level or a particular outcome.

We do not make that promise. Children have different experiences and needs. Discuss the current curriculum and your questions about the transition to primary school directly with the school.

The design, storytelling and problem-solving activities on this page are examples. Materials, themes, duration and participation may vary with the group and the current plan.

Date of birth, previous school experience, everyday needs and family expectations may be useful starting points. Contact the school for current admission requirements, group arrangements and availability.
