Age 3: From play to friendship

Our approach makes room for children to create their own games and share experiences with others. Meeting around a toy, acting out a story or building something together can become meaningful moments in the day.

Small choices that invite “I can try” sit alongside experiences of listening and waiting. The aim is not for everyone to produce the same result, but to make space for a child’s ideas, feelings and individual participation.

These examples are not a fixed weekly timetable. Activities, materials and durations are adapted to the group; current arrangements can be discussed with the school.

Play and learning

What matters in everyday experiences

Playing with friends

Inviting someone into a game and trying different ways of playing together with adult support.

Stories and imagination

Turning an idea into play through picture books, puppets and everyday role play, with time for children’s own stories.

Expressing feelings

Valuing words, gestures and movement as ways to explain what a child enjoys, wants or finds frustrating.

Everyday responsibility

Carrying a chosen material, helping tidy up and trying manageable steps in everyday routines.

Colour, shape and materials

Noticing similarities, joining large pieces and using different materials to make ideas visible.

Expression through movement

Joining a rhythm, acting out a story and exploring stopping, starting and changing direction in play.

Illustrative activity ideas

What could we explore together?

01

A little play shop

Suitable classroom objects can become a pretend shop. Children try different roles, with questions and choices emerging from the game rather than following one correct script.

02

Let’s build a path

Building a path or structure with large blocks offers a way to share ideas. Trying again after a structure falls, or changing the plan, can be part of the experience.

03

Find the story’s sound

Children can add a rhythm, movement or simple sounds to a picture-book story. They might listen, act out one part or suggest a different ending.

Language through experience

Everyday encounters with English

English can be connected with familiar games, greetings, colours and movement songs. Meeting the same phrase again in different contexts keeps language close to everyday experience.

Children are not expected to answer every question in English. Listening, pointing or joining a song’s movements are also meaningful encounters. Ask the school for details of teachers, duration and current content.

Connecting home and school

With families, at each child’s pace

A favourite game, the stories your child likes to tell and how they express themselves around other children are useful starting points for an introductory conversation.

Rather than drawing quick conclusions from a talkative day or a quiet one, we value discussing experiences across home and school. Listening without comparison and noticing small everyday changes can guide that conversation.

Your questions

Sharing is more than giving up a toy. Building a common game, waiting and expressing a preference can be explored with adult support. Discuss your child’s experience with the school team.

Stories, role play, movement, art and suitable play materials are the example areas on this page. Length and presentation vary with the group’s interests; confirm the current programme with the school.

Please share any previous language experience when discussing the programme. The approach described here introduces English through everyday play; it does not promise a particular language level or outcome.

Please call ahead to confirm visiting arrangements and a suitable time. We can discuss classroom life, age groups, settling in and your questions.
