Expression through art, music and movement

Joining a rhythm, sharing an idea through colour or exploring through movement: we value opportunities for children to experience different forms of expression.

Hear the choice behind the creation

Asking what a child was thinking while making something can open a different conversation from simply naming the finished picture. The meaning may differ from an adult’s first guess.

These examples connect art, music and movement with school life. They do not promise a specialist teacher, a number of weekly lessons or a stage performance. Ask the school about current arrangements.

Art, music and movement

More than one way to express an idea

One child might express an idea through a picture, another through movement or a story. Making room for different forms of expression moves beyond one standard of an attractive finished product.

Choices matter: the materials selected, the interpretation of a rhythm or the way a character is portrayed. Talking about those choices makes the process visible.

Three paths from one story

01

Express it in colour

A drawing or suitable collage materials allow children to choose different details from the same story.

02

Add a rhythm

Clapping a character’s footsteps or using an appropriate instrument can bring sound and movement together.

03

Act it out

Children may use movement to express an event or feeling. Watching or proposing another role can also be participation.
