Discovering through touch and experience
Sensory play offers a chance to look closely at textures, materials and new ideas. Working with playdough and different materials makes room for curiosity.
We value experimenting and discovering, as well as the finished creation.
Suitable materials and thoughtful supervision
Sensory exploration does not mean every material is suitable. Age-appropriate selection and adult supervision matter, and children should not be forced to touch something they do not want to explore.
Ask the school about materials and activity arrangements. This article does not describe therapy, provide a sensory assessment or promise a developmental outcome.
Looking at a material in different ways
Texture, shape, weight and relationships between objects can all invite curiosity. A child may want to touch a material, place it elsewhere or simply look closely.
Within an age-appropriate, supervised experience, there can be room for different attempts rather than one prescribed use. Materials should be selected for the child and the activity.
Accompanying discovery
Allow time to notice
Before giving instructions, observe what draws the child’s attention.
Listen to the attempt
Ask what the child wants to try and what changes they notice. Open questions do not demand one predetermined answer.
Allow different expression
A drawing, explanation, structure or new game may follow. Identical finished products are not required.
